You Can’t Catch me

Painted Ceramic  Height 40 cm  – SOLD

This highly abstracted figurative sculpture is loosely based on a very joyous, free sculpture Pablo Picasso created out of bendable sheet metal. I made it out of clay, fired and coloured with spray paints, finished off with shoe polish  and wax. I was associating along the lines of the “gingerbread man”, whose main achievement in the story I remembered was his ability to get away from people and things, and miraculously come back to life over many occasions –  a Houndini made from flour!

The resulting sculpture seems valence while in perpetual motion, all-embracing with his arms, mid-motion running , with one leg in the air, one firmly planted on the ground. Three puzzle-like negative shapes  (= air-shapes  trapped between parts of the sculpture) offer a cohesive form that “holds it all together” in this sculpture .
