Trumpet Woman, 2011
Painted Ceramic (height 70cm)
This figural ceramic sculpture of a thin woman, her arm ending in two large trumpet-like shapes was inspired by Chinese ceramic glazed sculptures of ladies with very wide sleeves. The form was very close to full abstraction: when I took the head off the sculpture, no figure could be recognised.
While making her, I played with these two impressions – and in the end I committed to the “head-on” figure, as I could achieve a more meaningful, emotional expression.
I felt a woman of little strength and substance engaged in the strenuous effort of reaching up, and lifting these heavy sleeves above her head: her work and ambition so much larger than her bodily strength.
