Mother and child 3 2008
Painted Ceramic height 57 cm – SOLD
This ceramic painted sculpture of two heads is closest in style to my great inspiration of African carved wooden sculpture, although the baby’s head is more realistically formed. The feeling that I evoke is less one of closeness and merging, rather instead indicates separateness and aloofness.
The baby’s head is strangely un-held and unprotected, though attached to and leaning against the mother’s chin and shoulder. The mother appears “proud” and tense, with harsh diagonal angles indicated by nose and neck . She is possibly vigilant and protective of the softer, dreamier and relaxed child.
